Some Important Points About IPMS Judging

The following observations are based on many years of experience as a judge on the regional and local level for IPMS USA and on the International and regional level for AMPS

Closed System Judging  (that is: judging where models are compared to each other within a category to determine which is the most well done model within the category) is commonly practiced by IPMS USA in its local, regional, and national contests.  A First, Second, and Third Place are determined using standardized judging criteria set forth in the Judging Handbook (IPMS/USA Competition Handbook) that may be found at: http://www.ipmsusa.org/MemberServices/memberservices.htm .

Quick Look Review: The Dornier Do-335 in 1/48th Scale by Tamiya (Kit # 61074)
By Chuck Wise

One of the great what if stories of WW II is: What if the Luftwaffe had seen fit to push the Dornier Arrow into full scale production in late 1943 rather than dawdle with its development so that it never saw squadron service?

In the early stages of the diorama the layout was decided. After that the base was masked off with tape. An area was also masked off for the name plate. A ¼” border was masked off as well in order to be able to place on an acrylic lid...

The last ship in the diorama is the USS Inchon (LPH 12). This is a Waveline/Pitroad kit. Like the others it’s a resin kit. It comes with three CH-46s and a like number of CH-53s. I also add six more CH-46s (by JAG), three UH-1s and two AH-1(by White Ensign Models)....

One of the other ships in the diorama is the USS Newport (LST 1179), model by JAG Fine Ships. Above is the basic kit. Additional photo-etched railings will be needed as well as vehicles. This LST will feature about 28 jeeps from White Ensign Models, nine Deuce-and-a-Half trucks, again by JAG, four water trailers and two towed 155s from a Tamiya kit. I was planning to place eight M-60s on the aft deck, but to be accurate, LSTs carry tanks and heavy equipment below in a well deck.

Most of the USS Pensacola (LSD 38) is now together. The next steps will be adding the decals and then the photo-etched parts. The kit came with a set of photo-etch containing the cranes and the mast. I will also be adding a few sets from Gold Medal Models including: Chains and Anchors, US Navy Modern set, Machine Guns, Doors and Hatches, and Accommodation Ladders. So with a photo-etch bending tool (in this case an Etch Mate) it is time to get to work.

Part One

The diorama will include a LPH (Amphibious Assault Helicopter), LSD (Dock Landing Ship), and a LST (Tank Landing Ship). The LPH is a Wave Line product and the LSD and LST are from JAG Fine Ships. The diorama is about 16 x 20 inches in size, and is taking place in the early 70’s.
