One of the things that I brought to Walt's is a background in painting, and a particularly useful thing that I have learned over the years of painting models and working on various paintings on canvas, is that I always tend to under-size the brush that I use for a particular task. What I mean by this is when I am painting the eyes of a particularly fiddly model, my first instinct is to grab a teensy weensy brush and use that to get into the nooks and crannies. The fact that the paint dries in the brush before I get it to the model didn't dawn on me until I started using a better grade of paints such as Vallejo. Now, I always upsize the brushes that I tend to use on a particular task. I don't remember a time in the last year where my 10/0, 5/0 or even a 3/0 brush has gotten used by me. My base coating tends to start with a 2, my detail work is a 1. I also have an array of types of brushes for certain tasks...such as metallics, or soaking the kit with a wash. If anyone has any questions about the care and feeding of their brushes I would be more than happy to answer any you may have!
